Michigan online gambling revenue reaches $1.98bn in 2022

Gross receipts from online sports betting and internet casino games in Michigan amounted to $1.98bn in 2022, a 41.4% year-on-year increase.

The yearly total, comprising gross receipts from both commercial and tribal operators in the state, was comfortably ahead of the $1.40bn figure posted during the first full year of legal online gambling in Michigan in 2021.

Of this total, $1.58bn came from online casino gaming, while internet sports wagering was responsible for $399.6m in gross receipts.

Internet casino gaming generated $1.58 billion in gross receipts, and internet sports betting produced $399.58 million in gross receipts. Total handle for the year also jumped 24.3% to $4.60bn.

Combined total adjusted gross receipts, which also account for promotional spending, was $1.65bn, representing a year-on-year increase of 47.8%. This included $1.43bn in adjusted gross internet gaming receipts and $219.6m from sports betting.

Tribal and commercial operators paid $303.0m in tax and payments to the State of Michigan during 2022.

Publication of the annual online gambling performance comes after earlier this month it was also revealed that Detroit’s three land-based commercial casinos reported a year-on-year decline in gaming revenue for 2022, with revenue down across both slots and tables games and sports betting.

Revenue for the 12 months to December 31, 2022, was $1.28bn, down 1.4% from $1.29bn in the previous year. Slots were responsible for $983.7m of total revenue, representing 77% of the market, then table games with $273.3m (21%) and sports betting at $18.8m (2%).

Record igaming December

Turning to the online gambling market’s performance in December and gross receipts from internet sports betting and internet casino games for the final month of 2022 was $201.6m, up 28.8% from December 2021 and 8.2% ahead of November 2022.

Gross receipts from igaming reached $152.8m in December, a new record for the state, while adjusted online gambling gross receipts amounted to $137.5m.

Turning to sports betting and while a gross receipts figure from this area of the market was not disclosed, adjusted gross receipts totaled $30.8m, while handle for the month hit $478.7m.

Licensed operators in the state paid $30.4m in taxes and payments to the state of Michigan during the month.
