Pennsylvania gambling revenue up 18.2% year-on-year in January

Gambling revenue in Pennsylvania increased 18.2% year-on-year in January after the state reported growth across almost all market sectors.

Revenue for the month – comprising land-based slots, table games, sports betting, igaming, video gaming terminals (VGTs) and fantasy contests – reached $464.4m, up from $393.1m in January last year but 2.2% lower than $475.0m in December 2022.

Retail slots remained the primary source of revenue by some margin, generating $202.2m in January, up 20.1% year-on-year, while land-based table games revenue also increased 7.3% to $83.9m.

Next, online casino revenue was 22.9% higher at $133.1m for the month. Internet slot revenue climbed 25.6% to $90.2m in internet slot revenue and igaming table revenue also increased 21.0% to $40.0m, though online poker revenue slipped 14.6% to $2.9m.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National claimed top spot in the online casino segment with $55.1m in revenue for January, ahead of the Valley Forge Casino Resort on $29.7m, then Rivers Casino Philadelphia with $28.5m.

Turning to sports betting and revenue was up 22.0% year-on-year to $39.3m, comprised $36.2m from online wagering and $3.0m at retail sportsbooks. This was despite the amount bet by players during the month falling 2.7% from $793.7m in January 2022 to $772.3m this year.

Valley Forge Casino Resort and partner FanDuel came out on top in this segment with a total of $26.9mn in revenue from $313.0m in bets, ahead of Hollywood Casino at the Meadows and Barstool with $4.1m from $202.5m and Hollywood Casino at Morgantown, also with Barstool, on $2.2m off $53.6m.

Elsewhere, revenue from video gaming terminals was 7.9% higher at $3.3m though fantasy sports revenue fell 9.5% to $2.6m.
