The Borgata seems to be setting out its stall as the new leader of New Jersey’s igaming market, with May marking its third consecutive month in the top spot after overtaking long-time market leader Golden Nugget in March.
iGaming Business and Ficom Leisure are pleased to present the New Jersey iGaming Dashboard, providing revenue and product metrics on the state’s regulated market.
The casino operator took a 30.3% share (on a GGR basis) of the igaming market in May, a slight drop on April’s 30.4% but significantly ahead of Golden Nugget, which held 28.7% last month.
Both were some way ahead of third-placed Resorts Digital, whose share grew to 19.9%, up from 18.2% in April.
Overall, igaming operators enjoyed their second-best month ever in May, with GGR of $108.2m representing a slight 0.5% rise on April but a more significant 20.6% year-on-year jump.
This was despite the fact that poker revenues continued to disappoint. At $2.4m, last month was flat on the previous month, but was down almost 50% on last May.
Sports betting operators also fared well in May, with both land-based and online turnover up on a month-on-month and year-on-year basis.
Punters placed bets worth $734.7m online in May, a 7.9% increase on April and a more than fivefold jump on last May, when most sporting events had been cancelled due to the pandemic.
In retail outlets, bettors wagered $79.6m, a 19.1% rise on April and up from zero last May, when outlets were closed.
It was Meadowlands that benefited most from the surge in betting activity, which drove its share of the sports betting market to an all-time high of 65.4% on a GGR basis.
Second-placed Resorts Digital saw its share fall to 18.0% last month, down from 21.9% in April, while third-placed Borgata lost even more ground, seeing its share fall to 7.3%, a 40% fall from April’s 12.3%.
