NFL suspends more players for breaching betting rules

News

The National Football League (NFL) has suspended another four players for breaching rules on betting.

Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry, both of the Indianapolis Colts, were suspended until at least the end of the 2023 season. Free agent Demetrius Taylor was also banned for the entire 2023 campaign.

All three players were found to have placed wagers on NFL games during the 2022 season. They can petition for reinstatement at the end of the upcoming 2023 campaign.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Petit-Frere of the Tennessee Titans was handed a six-game suspension for betting on non-NFL sports at the club facility.

The NFL gambling policy prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility.

Rodgers and Berry were released from the Colts upon confirmation of their suspensions.

Protect sporting integrity

“We have made the following roster moves as a consequence of the determination that these players violated the league’s gambling policy,” Colts general manager Chris Ballard said.

“The integrity of the game is of the utmost importance. As an organization we will continue to educate players, coaches and staff on the policies in place and the consequences that may occur with violations.”

The Titans also released a statement on Petit-Frere’s suspension, saying it would continue to educate players about the importance of abiding by league rules.

“We believe in Nick and know that he has deep respect for the integrity of the game and our organization,” the Titan said. “We will continue to emphasize to our players the importance of understanding and adhering to league rules and policies.”

Other player suspensions

The latest rulings come after the NFL handed out suspensions to five other players earlier in the year for similar breaches.

Detroit Lions receivers Jameson Williams, Quintez Cephus, Stanley Berryhill and safety CJ Moore were all suspended, as was Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney.

Cephus, Moore and Toney were all suspended indefinitely for betting on games during the 2022 season. They will not be able to apply for reinstatement until after the 2023 season.

Williams and Berryhill were issued six-game suspensions, covering the opening six games of the 2023 NFL regular season. Both players will be eligible to participate in all off-season and pre-season activities, including pre-season games.

A league review uncovered no evidence indicating inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.
