Indiana iGaming Dashboard – August 2020

Insight | Data

There were signs of a strong revival in Indiana’s sports betting market last month, though it’s clear punters still favour online over the recently reopened retail outlets.

iGaming Business and Ficom Leisure are delighted to present the Indiana iGaming Dashboard, providing a monthly breakdown of the latest figures from the Midwestern State’s regulated gambling market.

The data will be updated monthly following the official release of figures from the Indiana Gaming Commission.

After a disappointing drop in activity in June, operators in the Hoosier state saw revenues more than double last month to $6.7m.

This was a big increase from June’s $2.9m and was the strongest result since February, the last month before the sports betting market was hit by the widespread cancellation of sporting events.

As has been the case for the past six months, the bulk of revenues came from the online and mobile channels, with operators collectively making $5.5m.

Though last month marked the first month since the pandemic began that land-based casinos were able to open for the entire month, players shied away from returning en masse.

Revenues from retail were just $0.8m in July, though it’s worth noting that this was a significant improvement on June’s -$0.2m.

The revenue rises in both retail and online occurred alongside corresponding rises in turnover.

Online handle rose to $64.5m, up from $29.1m in June. On the retail front, handle increased tenfold to $6.3m, up from just $0.6m the previous month.

There was a further decrease in the amount bet on ‘other sports’ last month as major baseball and basketball leagues returned to the US sporting scene. Betting on other sports fell to 47.4% of total activity, down from 68.7% the previous month.

Baseball, on the other hand, saw its share rise to 8.3%, up from 2.1% in June, while basketball rose to 20.6%, up from 6.9% the previous month.

Ficom Leisure also provides monthly figures on Iowa in the Iowa iGaming Dashboard, New Jersey in the New Jersey iGaming Dashboard and Pennsylvania in the Pennsylvania iGaming Dashboard.
